Honestly, if the RPG is a 'zine' sized book (5x8), I can totally imagine having a 'spread' character sheet, because you can literally slap that baby onto a photo copier and photo copy multiple sheets if need be without ruining the book. Because the spread is just the size of a single sheet of paper. Its why I always love a good single sided character sheet in a physical book, because then I have multiple ways of just 'getting more character sheets' ((Then again, for the longest time a personal photocopier was kind of a given for any home computer room, so I might just be the odd one out when it comes to the ease of "Just photocopy it bro")) But I can see the appeal of the 'tear out', especially if its a very floppy and larger 'magazine style' module that's designed to be pulled apart at the staples. A bit difficult to get a print out to something that uses a much larger sheet. It really just depends on how 'disposable' it's designed to be, or if it can serve as like, a 'mini rulebook' that can be supplemented with a full release or even as a 'pocket' variant of said rulebook. I mean, the "Mazes" concept is a very fun one, as those custom notepads arn't terribly expensive.

Learned how to play this over the weekend at Origins, my wife and I loved it. We can't wait to put everything together.

I wish all card games with colours gave every colour its own symbol, like MTG and Pokemon do. It's especially bad when they put holofoil effects on the coloured parts of the card. I'm not even colourblind, and I've had situations where I mistook blue holofoil cards for green, and the other way around. Also, the symbols add a little bit of character to every colour, making the game just a little more interesting.

Unfortunately I couldn't go to Free RPG Day this year due to a terminal case of "i don't wanna go outside" disease, so I really appreciate you showing off some of the stuff that was on display this year. I definitely would've liked that Dragonbane adventure and I'm so glad such a cool RPG passed the test, and the rest ranged from "that's kinda neat" to "I'll probably never use this". But man, Free RPG Day is always such a delight!

The runescape has Pregen's sort of that you use the Qr code to find, which I find great because you don't need tear or photocopy the pages.Heliana's book this year is a great MVP of class while it may not have pregens. it Had a sample of what the book has 1. adventure, 2 rules for small crafting and magic items, 3 new statblocks. 4 music 5. samples of their world's new class and races. Edit: another fail this year for me is obojima's adventure. For a 24 page booklet 8 is blank character sheets for dnd 5e, and for insprided by Studio Ghibli/Legend of Zelda I didn't feel the art was enough to push me into the world they wanted to make. If they included more of a splash art of the world or having the howler with a background maybe it would of been better.

I picked up the Runescape one since I'm a big fan of the game and lore and want to get into ttrpgs. The module does have character sheets, but you have to scan a qr code to download, so they will eventually be lost to time. Unfortunately it also doesn't come with friends to play it with that you don't need to bribe, which I think would REALLY up the package on these.

Two things: 1.The Avatar module was supposed to come with a pair of d6s, or at the very least each store should've received a pile of them to hand out (different from those premium ones some companies sent out). One guy apparently just loaded his pockets with them at my local store... but they exist, probably! 2. I noticed those character sheets in the Root book all fit on one sheet, how many are there? If there are more than 4, is it maybe 2x the number you need to run the campaign? And by chance, are the back to back characters ones who fulfill the same role in a balanced party? I guess what I'm saying is I've seen just enough to want more info before judging it poorly.

The layout talk was interesting but I wanted to know more about the actual games as someone who can't go out to get these. I'd like to learn about how well they introduce concepts to brand-new players, what they keep for these demos and what they remove from the full game to make for an easier first timer experience, how well they represent the actual games they are demoing in a bite-size form or if they give you an experience unlike what you'd find in the full game, etc. Would you plan on going over any of this in a separate video?

There's actually plenty of pregenerated characters for the essence 20 module but you have to download them from the qr code

But... What are the games at? Are you really going to just look at how the character sheets are formatted and move on???

The worst layout I've seen was just character info dumped in a three column layout shared with the rest of the module. Like a character would start in the lower third of one column and end halfway through the next column. Start on the third column, and continue to the next page. Worst of all was the first pregen character started on the same column as the surprise twist at the end of the adventure. Just terrible.

We've been in a digital-controlled world for so long, companies have forgotten how to make physical products. It's kind of sad, really. Don't let your tools shape you.

Would you believe that there is only one official RPG for Dragon Ball? The kicker is it only covered the first two arcs of Z and was made in the late 90s by R Talsorian. The same ones you didn'te even pick up from this year.

Kohdok, I'm a magazine designer and gamer for 20 years now, and I can't tell you how often I see awful arrangements like this. They simply don't employee a layout designer, it is much different from an artist.

Even if a character sheet takes up only one page, you can split it into two halves, and put two front halves on one side and two corresponding back halves on the other, so you can tear out the page, cut it in half, and have two sheets.

The problem with calling ray a mary sue is that disobeying the rules is the point of of the show, the rules are antiquated and limiting and the more you disobey them the more you grow, i dont think this mary sue applies

I read an article that some people in prison would play d&d with just a deck of cards. I guess if you have two suits up to ten you can shuffle 20 cards to work as a d20.

They are already talking about a $60+ price tag on the 2024 books that are getting released after September '24. I'm probably not going to waste my chump change on that. I went back to AD&D 2nd Edition, and my friends and I are having a blast with an original Dragonlance Campaign setting from the 1990's. Thanks for the video, and the Update!

I don't know about other games, but the secret rares and secret premium rares in pokemon are just alternate art versions of rare, common, and uncommon ones

I love how much you bashed Eye of Judgment yet all what you said made me wanna buy it and I did. I loved it, if someone released something similar i'd buy it in a heartbeat. Best 20$ I have spent, however even at 70$ MSRP back then it would have not been a bad purchase, you get a Playstation Eye, a cloth playmat(albeit cheap but way better than a paper mat), a starter deck, a booster pack and the video game. It can be played single player which means you can play it out of the box without needing to gaslight someone else into it. Also it had online multiplayer which is now unfortunately not working which would allow players to play with others. Also it can be played with another player locally but they would need their own deck or you could both draw from the same deck and slap the booster pack cards to bulk it up. The biggest complain I would have on it is how they handled future sets, you had to actually buy a separate license to use the cards you ALREADY PAID for which is absurd. Imagine you bought a 15$ starter deck from the new set just to realize that you had to buy a 15$ digital license so that the video game lets you use them.

Yeah. I originally pushed that Star Wars Destiny should of been a LCG, it would have done AMAZING that way. But now hearing how FFG handled the other LCGs yeaaaaahhhhh. Seems FFG while they can make cool rules and mechanics have zero skill in both the boxing/distribution of their games. Hell in X-Wing for the longest time to get certain upgrade cards you had to buy ships from entirely different factions you might not want to play. Now MY take on Destiny as a LCG should of been. Starter box has 2 Dice for each of the Heros in the starter so you can play them at 1 or 2 dice. 3 copies of every dice card so you have a playset, I think it was 3 might of been 2 IDK. 3 copies of every action. AKA a playset of everything. Expansions based on both Alignment, aka Light side or Dark Side, and their Faction, Military/Force User/Scoundrel. Each expansion has 2 dice for each hero, 3 copies of every dice card for that specific faction, and the GENERIC ones, and 3 copies of each action. So you ended up with things like Force Villians, Scoundrel Heros, Imperial Navy, Rebel Fleet, Etc etc. Price it at 80 for Starter and 50 or 60 a expansion. I would of bought SOOOOOO much instead of the stupid 120$ booster boxes.

Well Ill argue the difference in the Pokemon and Genshin is that every one of those pulls is possible to get a rare. Meaning you could get multiple rares. It would be somewhere inbetween Normal packs and Magics "Collector Boosters". Which those collector boosters are roughly 15 to 20 dollars a booster.

Well considering that Richard Garfield, THE FATHER OF CCGs, has come out himself and said that Mana being in the main deck of Magic is one of its biggest flaws design wise, amongst other things, I think Resource hate IS valid. The problem with Resource in any game is that it completely removes skill and really makes winning dumb luck. One can have a perfectly locked down win but just cause your deck says "nope your next mana isnt for 6 turns" you lose, through no play error of your own. As you said many games have tried to "fix" Resource problems, most notably I think Force of Will got the closest to fixing the problem, although Id make a change to even that system to have it perfect imo. In FoW i would have the first "mana" of the turn be free, so everyone is always on curve. THEN you could tap/spend your leader for the deck if you wanted to accelerate your mana. This makes it a trade off as since a good number of FoW decks are designed around their Leader being the lynchpin. So you either keep your commander for attacking doing other things OR you accelerate your resource curve. Also my favorite CCG of all time, yes even more so than MTG, Warlord Saga of the Storm, is getting a relaunch and is for the most part a resourceless game and plays so much better than MTG or Pokemon IMO. Edit: 1:44 Yeah NO Mana Flood/Drought is NOT a "skill issue". And yes I know the response is "It is cause you just dont know how to properly mana curve your decks". MTG/CCG/Game player for nearly 30 years at this point. When a core game mechanic has intricacies that can mess up a 1st time players game, and that same intricacies can complete mess up a long time veteran simply cause enui/chaos/entropy decides that the next 5 cards are lands that is NOT a "skill issue". And I wont sit here and entertain the idea it is cause it flat out isnt. When the phrase "Top Deck Wins" is such a ground in trueism in magic its not a skill issue on anything pertaining to drawing.

Do the card colors in the OPCG mean anything flavourwise (to be honest I can't figure out the mechanics meaning for all of them either)? Maybe this is just a me thing, but if they don't then I think they should. I just struggle trying to figure out the rhyme or reason for the card colors and think flavoring them as some sort of in story factions or mind sets would do a lot to flavoring the game as a whole.

Thats still so expensive compared to something like gunpla. You can get a color separated model made up of 5-10 runners for 15 bucks.

I have always loved blind boxes, as long as I can choose which faction I'm going blind into, I'm all for it

So I will add that the more space marines heroes box is less randomized. If you buy the whole package of them then you get every mini in the set plus one, this was done so you could play killteam with them (which they have rules for) but if you buy them one at a time in an open package then it’s random. I hope they do this again with another army

I once DM’d a one shot and I created a puzzle that was basically the Indiana Jones 3 puzzle where they had to jump across a hall with letters on the floor and spell out a word. The key to them solving was a journal one of the enemies had that was translating the symbols into common. For that I found a small blank book at the dollar store and made the physical prop for my players to flip through and use to solve the puzzle. On each page I drew the symbols that were on the floor and matching to each letter of the alphabet. It was on them to figure out what the word was based on context clues. Very memorable puzzle for my group and it cost $1 and about two hours of time to make the book a prop.
